Sacramento, CA – Over 200 delegates representing the League of Women Voters will gather in Ventura for their Biennial Convention - “Grow the Future”. It will take place May 12-15 at the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach. Hundreds of members throughout the state will celebrate the 100th anniversary of California women securing the right to vote; elect officers and the Board of Directors; approve the budget and bylaw changes and participate in educational workshops and adopt the League’s biennial program and budget.

The Citizens Redistricting Commission posted materials on their website www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov to help the public understand the redistricting process and give testimony about their communities to the Commission.

Dear Governor Brown:

The League of Women Voters of California requests that you convert the sentences of all prisoners who are awaiting execution in California from death to life without the possibility of parole. Eliminating the death penalty is ethically sound and will help save money for the vital programs that serve people’s basic needs.

The Commission is taking testimony from area residents in regions throughout California before drawing the first round of draft maps which will be released in June. Final district maps must be certified by the Commission by August 15th.

The Citizens Redistricting Commission has released a schedule of 34 public input hearings and tentative business meeting through June 2011. Beginning on April 9, 2011, in Redding California , the commission held the first public input hearing.

Announcement

Computers with redistricting software are available for use by the general public at six sites operated by the Redistricting Group at Berkeley Law and affiliated with the Statewide Database;San Diego, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Fresno, Sacramento and Berkeley, The sites are designed to encourage public participation in the state redistricting process. The software can be used to develop map submissions or testimony for the redistricting commission.
