The Brennan Center for Justice has published an interesting brief on barriers to voter registration and voting on college campuses. You can find the brief here.
We are starting the process of redesigning several League Web sites and are looking for volunteers interested in working on some (or more) parts of the project.
The redesign is a multi-phase project that will likely involve many components, including gathering requirements, developing complementary visual designs for the sites, assessing the content management systems, and refining and writing content. We are currently in the initial information-gathering phase and are looking for volunteers with skills relevant to all phases of the project to participate in the planning process.
The Secretary of State has issued the following answer to the question of whether a voter is required to re-register to vote at a different address if the voter has left his/her home due to a foreclosure.

The Washington Post has created a new online resource that allows viewers to find out how state and national races are going , which are the battleground contests, as well as fundraising and spending charts. For the first time the candidates running for the open seat in the Senate District 15 participated in a televised debate at Cabrillo College.Sam Blakeslee, Jim Fitzgerald, Mark Hinkle amd John Laird were all on hand to answer questions that were submitted by the public. The forum was sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Weekly, Cabrillo College, KION-TV and KUSP Public Radio. State Senate Candidates Square Off on August 12
All four candidates running for the open seat in the 15th State Senate District have agreed to participate in a forum co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Santa Cruz Weekly newspaper. The candidates are:
Sam Blakeslee, Republican from San Luis Obispo
Jim Fitzgerald, Independent from Nipomo
Mark Hinkle, Libertarian from Morgan Hill
John Laird, Democrat from Aptos
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger nominated 3rd District Court of Appeal Justice
Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye as the next chief justice of the California Supreme Court.
This would make her the first Asian American to lead the state's judiciary
and give the California Supreme Court a female majority for the first time
in its history.
Justice Cantil-Sakauye nomination will be on the November 2, 2010 ballot for voter confirmation.
The Applicant Review Panel for the Citizens Redistricting Commission finalized a list of 120 applicants to be invited to interview in the next phase of the selection process. The semi-finalists consist of three sub-pools; 40 Democrats, 40 Republicans and 40 Other (not affiliated with either major party).
Interviews with applicants will be scheduled on working days between August 6 and September 13, 2010. The panel will select the 60 applicants, 20 in each sub-pool, to be sent on to Legislative leaders by October 1, 2010.
The Brennan Center for Justice has an interesting and timely report, It is one of the first systematic examinations of the chaotic and largely unseen world of voter purges. In a detailed study focusing on 12 states, the Brennan Center of Justice identified four problematic practices with voter purges across the county. To learn more, read the report here.
