The Trudy Schafer Fellowship for Public Policy

The League of Women Voters is a training ground for democracy. For 100 years we have helped Americans advocate for voting rights, equality, fairness, and transparency. In today’s landscape—with our democratic institutions under siege and the public’s faith in government in steep decline—skilled, diverse leadership is required.

The Schafer Fellowship celebrates long-time League lobbyist and leader, Trudy Schafer. The League of Women Voters of California is excited to invest more deeply in supporting a new era of advocates to follow in Trudy’s footsteps, winning change and reform in Sacramento. As our 100th anniversary approaches, this fellowship will ensure the League remains a guiding, trusted voice in Sacramento with a deep bench of talented leaders.

What: Fellows will benefit from training and mentorship in legislative analysis, community organizing, coalition building, communication, and lobbying. Fellows will take on leadership roles on legislative and ballot measure campaigns working in Sacramento and in their local communities.

Who: The Schafer Fellowships exist to identify emerging leaders, of any age, who can make a positive impact on California public policy if given training, support, and opportunity. Priority will be given to those whose key areas of interest align with the League’s legislative and program priorities.

When: 2018 and beyond

Read the remarks from Senator Bob Hertzberg prior to the honorary adjournment from the Senate in Trudy's memory.
