This December, the California Secretary of State announced the certification of a new political party, the first since 1995. With the qualification of the Americans Elect Party there will be seven parties appearing on California's ballots in 2012. Parties qualify by either registering 103,044 voters specifying that party preference (one percent of the total votes cast in the November 2, 2010 election), or by collecting signatures of 1,030,040 registered voters (ten percent of the total votes cast in the November 2, 2010 election).
How are state and local finances intertwined? How are services to local counties, cities and special districts financed?
Don't let anything stop you from voting -- our democracy needs YOU! Not sure if your polling place moved? Can't decide which candidate you should pick for city council, school board or judge? Need to listen to a recorded debate to decide? Never heard about a local bond measure?
The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has produced a "Map of Shame" allowing viewers to click on a state and discover what that state's law requires voters to show as identification before being allowed to vote.
The California Secretary of State has posted the Presidential Primary election calendar. Are you ready? Please see this link for information regarding the June 5, 2012 Presidential Primary. Voter Service will be closely watching the 1/26/12 deadline for the Legislature to qualify initiative measures for the June primary ballot. Other highlights from the lengthy calendar are:
The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law has a new report "Voting Law Changes in 2012" that evaluates the impact of new voting laws on the 2012 race. The new state laws are limiting access for voters.
Dear Governor Brown:
The League of Women Voters of California is pleased to support AB 293 (Hill) and respectfully requests your signature on this bill.
AB 293 would require each county elections office to establish a free access system by which a vote by mail (VBM) voter can find out whether his or her ballot was counted and, if not, the reason why it was not.
Dear Speaker Pérez:
The League of Women Voters of California urges you to allow SB 641 to be sent from the Appropriations Committee to the Assembly floor for debate and vote. This bill, as Senator Calderon proposes to amend it, would allow eligible citizens to register and vote at official locations on election day or during the 14-day period leading up to election day, a process dubbed same day registration and voting.
Dear Senator Kehoe:
The League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) is pleased to support AB 591 (Wieckowski), as amended July 7. This is a community right-to-know bill that would require operators of oil and natural gas wells to provide information on hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) to the Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources, for publication on the division’s Web site where it is available to the public as well as to DOGGR and other agencies.
