May 26, 2009 -- The California Supreme Court issued its decision today upholding the constitutionality of Proposition 8. The measure, passed by the voters on November 4, 2008, amended the California Constitution to provide that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

Trudy Schafer, LWVC’s Senior Director for Program, moderated a panel discussion sponsored by LWV North County San Diego and LWV San Diego on January 25.

On the November 2012 statewide ballot, there were 10 initiatives and 1 referendum for California voters to decide on. In May 2011, the League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) adopted a study to update of their position on the initiative and referendum (I&R) process.

Our Letter to the Editor:

The League of Women Voters of California, a long-time advocate of citizen involvement in the political process, is concerned about recent assaults on the California Environmental Quality Act.

CEQA is one of the few state laws ensuring that the public can weigh in on major land use decisions. It helps assure that both decision-makers and the public have adequate information to make informed decisions and that significant environmental impacts are avoided.

The Delta Reform Act of 2009 created the Delta Stewardship Council and required it to adopt a legally enforceable Delta Plan to meet the coequal goals of water supply reliability and ecosystem restoration in the Delta while protecting the unique cultural, recreational, natural resouce, and agricultural values of the Delta.

The League of Women Voters of California is pleased that Governor Brown was able to present a balanced budget.  While we are happy to see a budget that is not completely focused on painful cuts in state programs, it is still very early in the budget process, and we all need to proceed with caution. In this economy, the outlook may change.
