The League of Women Voters of California is pleased that Governor Brown was able to present a balanced budget. While we are happy to see a budget that is not completely focused on painful cuts in state programs, it is still very early in the budget process, and we all need to proceed with caution. In this economy, the outlook may change.
For too many years, essential state programs—from schools to mental health care to the courts—have been cut. As increased revenue becomes available, it is essential that we look at bringing these programs back to a healthy equilibrium. The health of our communities depends on taking care of each other and supporting the basic structures of our democratic society. Read more here.
