Op-Ed

Voting is a fundamental right, enshrined in the Constitution and buttressed by historic state and federal laws after civil rights battles that continue today. Anyone concerned about voting rights must be heartened by recent court decisions overturning restrictive, discriminatory voting laws in other states. But we shouldn't ignore a threat to voting rights here at home -- a threat that is remedied by a bill currently in the legislature.

California teaches Ohio about redistricting

Ohio might look to California for a solution to its gerrymandering problem. The Golden State has succeeded in removing politicians from the drawing of congressional district boundaries, something Ohio lawmakers have refused to do.

So, Californians end up with districts designed to reflect the common interests of their communities, unlike many Ohioans whose districts only reflect the re-election interests of politicians and their parties.

Which process sounds better to you?

California needs to better prepare for wildfires, drought, a changing snowpack, and extreme weather events. Proposition 68 will help. It will fund projects that reduce the risk of natural disasters, boost forest health, improve water quality, safeguard our water supplies and protect sensitive wildlife habitat. Prop 68 also provides new funding for parks and recreation – something my kids and I care about very much. Prop. 68 would enable local groups such as the Placer Land Trust to leverage charitable support to protect more land for current and future generations.
