A broad coalition of mostly environmental and public health advocates today asked the Bureau of Land Management to cancel all oil and natural gas lease sales on federal lands in the state until after it has finished a broad analysis of the environmental impacts of drilling and the use of hydraulic fracturing.

SB 4 (Pavley) was passed by the Legislature and sent to Governor Brown on September 11. This bill establishes a comprehensive statutory framework—probably the strongest in the country—for regulating hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) and acidization of oil and gas wells.
Fracking has been occurring without regulation in California for decades, despite evidence of harm from around the country. SB 4 provides permitting, accountability and transparency in well stimulation, including both fracking and acidization. The bill requires:
