Although problems persist, voter registration for 2016 elections will be easier for some

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) took the necessary first steps toward improving voter registration services offered online and at its 174 field offices across the state, though it still will need to address some major issues.

Beginning this month, people who are eligible and affirmatively choose to register when applying for or renewing a driver license or identification card at a DMV field office will:

Yes on Prop 68 image of parks

California must lead the way. Our state is feeling the effects of climate change—from severe droughts to devastating wildfires — yet our federal government is refusing to act. We are proud to support Yes on 68 as it takes a smart and efficient approach to protecting California’s natural resources. Proposition 68 will invest $4 billion in securing our state’s water supplies and ensuring every Californian has access to clean drinking water and safe, quality parks.

Save the delta stop the tunnels no waterfix

The League of Women Voters of California opposes the WaterFix—twin tunnels the Department of Water Resources proposes to bore under the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to move water for urban and agricultural uses in other regions.

Better options exist to address California’s water needs. The Santa Clara Valley has the innovative capacity to develop those options.

League of Women Voters of California, Capitol insurrection anniversary statement

One year ago today, the world moved both in slow motion and hyperspeed all at once. I woke up, planning to watch the certification of the election for the first time in my life. I had never watched it before, as it seemed so routine, so mundane - a procedural necessity. But last year, it felt important. The world was too shaky, too uncertain, and too many things that I had accepted as impossibilities had already happened. I needed to see it with my own eyes - it didn’t feel like a foregone conclusion.

Any time traveler revisiting the California of 1978 would have an easy time understanding why Proposition 13 passed so handily that year, lowering property taxes throughout the state to 1 percent of the latest sale price or 1 percent of the 1975 assessed value.

Op-Ed

Voting is a fundamental right, enshrined in the Constitution and buttressed by historic state and federal laws after civil rights battles that continue today. Anyone concerned about voting rights must be heartened by recent court decisions overturning restrictive, discriminatory voting laws in other states. But we shouldn't ignore a threat to voting rights here at home -- a threat that is remedied by a bill currently in the legislature.
