November 11, 2020
Our mission to empower voters and defend democracy calls louder than ever. As League members and supporters, your resilience, flexibility, creativity, and good old fashioned hard work meant that record numbers of Californians were able to safely and confidently cast ballots in the 2020 general election.
In California, ballots postmarked by November 3 can be received and counted up to 17 days following the election. Our county election officials are working hard to ensure that every vote is counted and every voice is heard. We stand by them, and election officials across the nation, and applaud the professionalism, integrity, and diligence with which they complete their work.
As votes are counted across the country, the results of some contests, including the Presidential election, have become clear and the people have spoken. Within California we have many votes still to count and await the results of some critical decisions for the future of our state. However, the projected passage of Proposition 17, restoring voting rights to people on parole, is a victory for California. It is thrilling to see so many Californians coming together to free the vote for our family members, friends, and neighbors. We worked hard with our partners across the state to expand the franchise and have more people have a voice in the future of their communities. This is a step in the right direction for building a more equitable future in California.
There is no doubt that the immediate days to come will be a trying time for us as individuals and as a country. We must practice patience and calm. The people have spoken. As the League, we are known for our steady and studied approach to government, and we are bulwarks of strength and integrity to the public. We will continue our work of empowering voters and defending democracy in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead.
We are grateful and proud to work for you and alongside you.
In League,
Carol Moon Goldberg, President, LWVC
