The League of Women Voters of California and other voter advocacy groups filed a lawsuit in federal court against the California Department of Motor Vehicles because it failed to offer voter registration opportunities to millions of Californians, as required by the National Voter Registration Act.
Four voting groups are suing California government officials, alleging violation of federal law.
The League of Women Voters of California, Acce Institute, California Common Cause and National Council of La Raza filed a complaint May 9 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Transportation Secretary Brian P. Kelly, Motor Vehicles Director Jean Shiomoto and California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, alleging they violated and continue to violate the 1993 National Voter Registration Act.
Meet our new intern, Bela Armstrong, a senior at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, California. Bela is part of a four year academy called CIVITAS which focuses on civics and becoming involved in your community. Bela chose to intern at the League of Women Voters because she agrees that it is extremely important that everyone votes, no matter what gender, race, or income. In her free time she works at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club and plays lacrosse.

Warn that dozens of bills that passed out of Assembly without 72-hour notice risk invalidation
Hundreds of delegates representing local Leagues of Women Voters throughout the state will gather for their biennial convention, themed “A Capitol Connection,” on June 1-4 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sacramento. California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, and California Budget and Policy Center Executive Director Chris Hoene are a few of the speakers who will address attendees. The Voting Modernization Bond Act of 2018, seeks $450 million to improve California’s voting systems. The funding would update aging equipment and modernize how the state conducts elections to improve the voting experience.
Meet Wesley Edwards, a rising senior from Denver, Colorado, pursuing a degree in Philosophy and Public Affairs from Claremont McKenna College in Southern California. Most of his coursework has focused on the intersection of beliefs and ethics, he is also passionate about government. During his internship at the League, Wesley will be developing toolkits and educational materials for use by local Leagues in areas like public financing of campaigns, voting accessibility and voter engagement, or local redistricting.
