February 27, 2014 2014 Civic Learning Award Winners Announced Thirteen California public high schools recognized

SACRAMENTO—Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today announced 13 winners of the Civic Learning Award for 2013–2014.  The awards, now in their second year, celebrate successful efforts to engage California public high school students in civic learning and spotlight replicable models for other schools.

Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye said, “These schools are beacons of change, helping students discover the power of democracy. Visiting some of the award-winning schools is always inspiring, and I look forward to that again this year.”

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson said, “Today’s students are the future of California, and if they grow up with strong civic learning, they grow up with an appreciation—and ability—for civic engagement. We honor the educators who translate this important concept into creative and effective learning programs, thereby creating models for other educators, and we honor the students who participate in these active and inspiring learning communities.”

The winners were selected by an expert panel, based on the depth and breadth of their civic learning courses or programs. Three schools earned Awards of Excellence:

    • Rio Americano High School, in Sacramento
    • High Tech High North County, in San Diego
    • Brawley Union High School in Brawley, Imperial County

Three schools received Awards of Distinction, and seven schools received Awards of Merit. The full list of award winners is here.

The Civic Learning Awards program is part of the Chief Justice’s civic engagement initiative and partnership with the Superintendent of Instruction. The partnership was launched last year with a Civic Learning Summit in February 2013. The two officials have also partnered in convening a task force on civic learning, which is now gathering public input on ways to revitalize civic learning in California
