See and hear those vying to be the next
State Superintendent of Public Instruction  

WHAT:   A candidates forum featuring three candidates running to replace Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell. The forum, to be held during the California State PTA's 111th Annual Convention, is co-sponsored by the state PTA and the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund. League President Janis R. Hirohama will serve as moderator.

WHERE: The Sacramento Convention Center, Room 203-204, 1301 L St., downtown Sacramento.

WHEN:  11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, April 30.

WHO:
Larry Aceves, former teacher, principal, school district superintendent and a past president of the Association of California School Administrators.

Gloria Romero, former professor at California State University, Los Angeles, current state Senator and chair of the Senate Education Committee and of the Budget and Fiscal Review Subcommittee on Education.

Tom Torlakson, former teacher and state Senator, current state Assembly member and chair of the Assembly's Select Committee on Schools and Community, and a member of the Education and Appropriations committees.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT:  This candidates forum provides one of the few opportunities to hear directly from the candidates who hope to lead the California Department of Education, which oversees the state's public school system and is responsible for the education of more than 7 million children and young adults in more than 9,000 schools.

The event is open to the press and will be videotaped for broadcast on the California Channel.
