Sacramento, CA - Last month, Helen Hutchison of Oakland was appointed President of the League of Women Voters of California and the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund to serve a one-year term to fight for voting rights, responsible public policy, and to lead the charge in providing accessible, nonpartisan election information to all Californians. Hutchison recently signed the ballot argument against Proposition 43, the water bond measure currently on the November election ballot. The League of Women Voters of California is supporting key ballot measures: Proposition 2, the rainy day fund, and Proposition 47, criminal sentencing. “I am thrilled to lead our grassroots members and supporters in the fight for voting rights, and will remain steadfast in our commitment to providing nonpartisan election information for California's diverse population,” Hutchison said. “We will continue to work hard for smart and responsible public policy to make our Golden State a fair and vibrant place for us all,” she added.

As the President of the League of Women Voters of California Education Fund, Hutchison is leading efforts to ensure that Californians have nonpartisan resources to engage them in civic life. These efforts include providing multilingual Easy Voter Guides, a best practices manual for official voter guides, and comprehensive election data served to the public through the new Voter’s Edge/Smart Voter partnership project.

Hutchison has been a League member since 1969, following the education she received when she accompanied her mother to League meetings as a child. As an adult, Hutchison has moved around the country, providing the opportunity to join the League in many different cities, including Claremont, California; Newton, Massachusetts; Los Angeles; Clackamas County, Oregon; and DeKalb County, Georgia. Hutchison was the president of the League of Women Voters of Oakland from 2003 to 2007, and served on the boards of directors of the Claremont, Clackamas County and Oakland Leagues in a variety of roles.

Since joining the LWVC board in 2008, Hutchison has been active in strategic planning, human resources, training, the initiative and referendum process, redistricting, legislation analysis, and ballot measure campaigns.

Hutchison graduated from Pomona College and is a retired computer systems analyst. She is also an active member of Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland, has two grown children, and resides in Oakland with her husband, an elderly cat, and occasional foster kittens.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
