League of Women Voters Endorses Governor’s Initiative to Get California Back on Track

Sacramento, CA – The League of Women Voters of California (LWVC) announced today that the nonpartisan organization’s board voted to endorse Governor Jerry Brown’s initiative to balance the budget and protect schools and public safety.

"The League of Women Voters of California strongly supports the Schools and Public Safety Protection Act this November because it is the way to start to put California’s finances back on firm footing,” said LWVC President Jennifer A. Waggoner. “The Governor’s initiative is the only measure on the November ballot that works within the framework of the state finance system and, therefore, will actually help eliminate the structural budget deficit. Important government services like health care depend on a balanced, adequate budget. Supporting the Governor’s initiative means protecting schools and local public safety so we can invest in a strong common future for California.”

The Schools and Public Safety Protection Act balances the budget and prevents additional school and public safety cuts by asking California’s highest earners to pay a little bit more - just three percent over seven years. Only couples making more than $500,000 a year are subject to this tax. The measure temporarily increases the sales tax by one quarter of one percent. Even with this slight increase, sales taxes will be lower than they were less than a year ago.
