Sacramento, CA – The League of Women Voters of California recognizes Women’s Equality Day on August 26, 2018, in celebration of the advancements that have been made towards achieving full political, economic, and social equality. The date commemorates the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which granted voting rights for American Women.

We are happy to share a new part of our Secretary of State's website honoring the legacy of women fighting for equality in California.

"When California women won the right to vote, they forever changed the state with an expanded and more inclusive democracy. The suffrage victory also gave rise to the League of Women Voters, created to finish the fight and aid in the reconstruction of our nation.  Today, we reflect on how far we have come and acknowledge that the fight remains yet unfinished. The struggle continues to ensure our electorate reflects California's rich diversity and to make certain all women are free to fulfill their highest potential," said Melissa M Breach, Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of California.

Women’s Equality Day is a celebration of the trailblazers, visionaries, and suffragists who have worked towards equal rights for all.

"The League was founded in 1920, just months before the 19th Amendment was adopted," said Chris Carson, president of the League of Women Voters of the United States. "As we approach the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment and the League in 2020, I am encouraged by the women leaders who continue to advocate for equality for all."

"This year is particularly important to recognize the achievements in the women’s rights movement as we are seeing more female candidates running for office in 2018," said Virginia Kase, CEO of the League of Women Voters of the United States. "Today we acknowledge the women who paved the way."
