The Issue
Forests in California are dying from drought and population pressure. The last five years of drought brought tremendous loss of forest as seen in the figure.
Wildfires are not only a human tragedy, but destroy forests and add to atmospheric CO2.
What We Can Do
Education on forest health (or distress), the movement of human population into forest lands, wildfire danger and protection, and the future threats can be done in collaboration with many organizations. Also, as we see forests waning, we might consider the effect of restricting human population growth into forested areas.
Who’s Working on It
The LWV-Butte County is hosting a speaker series on climate change with a focus on local issues – forest and wildfires.
