Show Your Support of Marriage Equality

In just a few short weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider two cases about the freedom to marry: the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8. Events are happening all over the country to raise awareness and show support for equal rights. Download flyers and other materials in the Organizing Toolkit. Attend a training. Our Commitment to Equal Rights

The California League has taken action for marriage equality for many years: http://archive.lwvc.org/lwvc/issues/marriage.html.

The League's Position on Marriage Equality

The League of Women Voters supports equal rights for all under state and federal law. We support legislation to equalize the legal rights, obligations, and benefits available to same-gender couples with those available to heterosexual couples. We support legislation to permit same-gender couples to marry under civil law. The League believes that the civil status of marriage is already clearly distinguished from the religious institution of marriage and that religious rights will be preserved.
